Roy Williams: Showman, Wide Reciever, Pizza Delivery Guy

Written by | Visited 139 times, 3 so far today

Roy Williams made national news a few days ago when he said he doesn’t tip his pizza delivery guys.  I for one am appalled.  As an Italian, I feel the pizza delivery man’s pain.  We were blackballed when we came to this country and some of the only jobs my people could were pizza delivery jobs.

Roy has stepped back from his comments a bit after a run-in with a pizza delivery guy at red light:

The ironic thing Saturday night I’m heading to the hotel and I stop at a light I never have to stop at, and it was red. And guess who pulls up next to me? Pizza Hut man. I roll my window down, and I say, ‘Pizza dude, how much am I supposed to tip you?’ He said ‘Three, four maybe five dollars.’ And I said, ‘Thank you.’ So now I see it’s three, four maybe five dollars and I’m going to start tipping the pizza man."

Even though Roy may have turned the tipping corner, Pizza Hut is not ready to let him off the hook.  Pizza Hut president Scott Bergren has challenged Roy to be a be a pizza delivery driver for a day.  Here is the letter the Scott sent to Roy:

Dear Roy,

We heard that you haven’t been tipping pizza delivery drivers, but recently chatted with one of our drivers and decided you need to start tipping. When a Pizza Hut pizza arrives hot and fresh, it’s easy to be distracted by all the deliciousness you’re about to enjoy, and our drivers certainly appreciate you taking the time to tip.

But what about all the drivers who missed being tipped in the past?

We’d like to issue you a challenge. Agree to work as a delivery driver for Pizza Hut for just one day in Detroit, and we’ll forgive all your previous tipping transgressions.

Furthermore, we’ll collect all the tips you receive and donate them to the World Food Programme as part of our World Hunger Relief Week, which is kicking-off October 14.

So, Roy, what do you say? There are a lot of hungry fans out there waiting.

Sincerely,

Scott Bergren
President, Pizza Hut

I think this could be fun, like Marc Cuban working at Dairy Queen or former 30 game winner Denny McClain working at 7-Eleven.  Oh, that was a court ordered work-release program? Well, still looked fun.

My only concern is how Roy’s constant first down celebrations will translate to pizza delivery.  He won’t forgo the celebration, I can tell you that for sure.  It is only a matter how of many innocent pizza will be spiked or get cold, because he celebrates for 5 minutes after even the easiest delivery.
