Stay…Stay As Long as You Can…I’m talking to you Xavier Lee

Written by | Visited 131 times, 4 so far today

With nothing left to prove in the college game, except perhaps improve on his career completion percentage of 38%, Florida State backup QB Xavier Lee declared for the NFL Draft on Monday. The former Mr. Florida and Rivals.com #1 ranked dual threat quarterback in high school, Lee apparently believes that he impressed enough people in his three starts this year for the Seminole to hear his name called in April. Either that or he is sick of this whole “passing classes” thing that everyone seems so concerned about these days.

You have to assume thewith Drew Weatherford coming back for his senior year Lee knew he was going to have his playing time limited. He is 6’4”, 235 pounds so he has the body, and his arm strength would rival over half of the NFL’s starting quarterbacks. But will an NFL team take a chance with a guy who can’t hit receivers and hasn’t shown any development in reading and reacting to defenses?

While Xavier Lee continues his apparent quest to play in the Arena Football League, let’s take a look at some other early entry draftee’s that didn’t work out so well:

Ramonce Taylor- RB Texas (Undrafted, Unsigned)

n

A big part of the 2005 national championship team, Taylor wasn’t drafted despite scoring 15 TD’s in the national championship year. Scouts were not impressed with his workouts saying that they thought he looked 5 lbs heavier. When explained that the 5 lbs of weed that Taylor apparently carries on him (as was found in his car during a 2005 arrest), NFL teams were less then amused, although Ricky Williams was said to be looking to add Taylor to his Ultimate Frisbee Intramural Team.

Ty Tryon – Golfer -(PGA Tour, Hooters Tour, Gateway Tour)

Golf fans may remember Ty’s exploits at the 2001 Honda Classic. At 16 years old, Ty becamse the youngest player ever to make a cut at a PGA event. He immeadiatly turned pro and immeadiatly got worse. He failed to hold on to tour status and has spent time on the Hooters and Gateway Tour. Ty seemingly could have got a scholarship to almost any golf school and enjoyed the college golfer groupie ass that college players have come to enjoy.

n

Broc Lesnar – Professional Wrestler – (Minnesota Vikings, New Japan Pro Wrestling, Mixed Martial Arts)

Even though Brock was already a pro when he decieded to go pro in something else, I think this one still counts based on the stupidity of the decision. Brock gave up a multi-millon dollar WWE contract to attempt to play football in the NFL. He got into a couple pre-season games with the Vikings before being cut for missing practices due to an injury. After wrestling in Japan for a bit, Brock switched to mixed-martial arts and actually won his first K-1 fight. Even though me may end up as a success in Mixed Martial Arts, I have to believe that getting fake hit for millions of dollars is better than getting real hit for much less, that’s just me though.

n

Dwight Brewington- SG Liberty University (Undrafted, NBDL)

ndnd

The former Providence Friar and Liberty Liberal Art Christian declared early after averaging 14 points his junior year at Jerry Falwell U. The only reason you may have heard about Brewington, unless you’re a HUGE Tulsa 66er fan is that he is deaf. Now I refuse to make any type of sophomoric joke at his expense. I just don’t see how Brewington, with his resume, would think he would “hear” his name on draft night.

Darius Walker – RB – Notre Dame (Undrafted, Houston Texans)

Apparently someone told Darius that the NFL can’t do without undersized running backs with average speed, because Darius left after his junior year. Shockingly, he went undrafted. Fortunately for Darius, the Houston Texans saw something that everyone might have missed. Continuing with his good fortune, Darius found himself getting some carries when 15-20 Texans running backs when down with injuries. (Ahman Green, Ron Dayne) While Walker might have made one of the worst decision in this bunch, he was also the most lucky, and that has to count for something, although I am not sure what.

n

Marcus Taylor – G – Michigan State (Drafted Second Round, Germany)

To everyone’s surprise, Marcus Taylor declared himself eligible for the 2002 NBA draft after only his sophomore season at Michigan State. He was drafted (52nd by the Timberwolves), but much later than he, and hangers on that were ruining his life, might have expected. After being released by the Timberwolves in the pre-season, Marcus went to the CBA, then France, then the WBA, then Greece, then the NBDL, and he currently finds himself playing for TBB Trier, or Germany.

n

Ernest Shazor-SS University of Michigan (Undrafted, AWOL)

n

Too slow to play safety, not a good enough tackler to be a linebacker. This is the scouting report I read about Shazor when he entered the NFL Draft early. Maybe he thought his All American status would make scouts forget his 4.7 forty time, but it didn’t. He was on Arizona for a year before disappearing off the face of the earth. The last thing I read about him was from this blog. If you’re not showing up for the AFL, your next stop is the KFC.

Korleone Young- SF Hargrave Military Academy (Detroit Pistons, IBL, CBA, Australia, Russia, China, Israel)

n

Drafted by Detroit, who had the theory “well if a high school kid thinks he’s good enough to play in the NBA, he’s probably right”, Young played in 3 career NBA games. This was 1998 of course, amid the drafting of high school kids with talent, but because of all the talent to come around that time (Garnett, Bryant, McGrady, etc.), Young sticks out like a sore thumb. As of 2006, Korleone was still playing in Europe, so maybe he wasn’t all that bad, I mean Mateen Cleaves plays in Europe……never mind, he could still be bad.

  • Hi guys

    Good review and write-up.

I really plan to get back into it this year – get in shape and perfect this art of ours.

Thanks for putting together a nice resource. Personally I just got to put in a plug and say fitness rocks

Always good to read about the activies of people.

I have trained hard in the past with running etc in thew army but I have to say combining Q10 and sparring gets the best results.

ALso with the latest in mdeical science and wholistic techniques I would not be supprised if life expectancy rose to 90+ years in the modern world.
    d should be discussed.

I wanted to start my posts here with a comment and thanks for putting together a nice resource.
