My problem is how visible they have become in the last few years. In years past, the only reason anyone was supposed to know the ref existed was because of the silly striped shirts or uniforms they would wear. A foul was called by blowing their whistle once, looking for the number of the offender, turning to the scorers table, and relaying the foul with a basic sequence of extremity motions. The job of the ref was not to infuriate or excite the crowd—just keep order in the playing field or court and make sure the kids play nice. During the NCAA basketball tournament this year, a foul can’t be called without a choreographed dance routine and 20-30 whistle blows. They almost seem to be in competition with one another:
“I’ll take your 12 whistle blows, lawn sprinkler charging call, and 4.6 second 40-yard dash down the court, and I’ll raise you a back hand-spring, full layout into a disco arm spin travelling call and an officials timeout for the small forward I just kicked in the face.â€
When it comes down to it, how about just being objective, making the calls, and getting home to your families without needing to make 20,000 new friends or enemies (“Did you see that, honey? They love me…they really love meâ€). I know it’s tempting, but let’s face it—you’re never going to reach the pinnacle of the athletic prowess your daddy thought you were going to reach when you were in high school and didn’t hit that 17 inch growth spurt you needed to contend. In the meantime, if we need to see great acting/dancing in the officials’ role, we’ve already got that covered:

I have watched several basketball games this season and four games I watched a loss was a direct outcome of officiating, in which the officials controlled the tempo or lack of fouls called on a paticular team forced the coach to to abandone their game plan. One was the Tennessee Lady Vols. loss to Stanford on their home court. The fouls called on Tenn. side of the court caused coach Summent to bench two of her best players while Stanford caught up. Foul calling was two to one for Stanford. Another one was East Tennessee St. tournament in Nashville where State was ahead of Bradley, which was a hometown team untill a ref called a tech.foul on State, which completely changed the complexion of the game. The tech. foul was not necessary and resulted in a State loss. A third game resulted in a loss for Cal. in their tournament against UCLA. Cal was up with just a few seconds to go when Cal. got the ball out of bounds under the UCLA goal. A UCLA player pushed a Cal. player out of bounds, right in front of an official standing beside the Cal. player who handed in the ball. The ref. gave the ball to UCLA and they scored, a foul was called and UCLA won, no, not won , was robbed of their champinship. The other was the Ten. vs Louisville game. The ref.,s would call little tickytack fouls on Ten. while they did not call fouls on Louisville in which a player ran over Ten. player,several times.Louis, was in the double bonus in the first half with only eight minutes gone. The same in the second half. They called two fouls on Chisim withen the first two minutes forcing the coach to bench him and that forced Tn to play a completely different game. Home cooking…..? Seems like this stuff goes on too many times and a lot of it depends on who you are. NC, Dook,UCLA, Louis. and teams like that benifit from a onesided called game just because of who you are.
How can you honestly say that the outcome of the Louisville/Tennessee game was DIRECTLY affected by the refs? Louisville won by 19. Were the refs bad? Sure, but don’t be ridiculous. They had a quick whistle in general.
